Dear Parents,

Happy spring!  We are seeing signs of new life all around us.  We are seeing signs of new learning every day in first grade.  We have finished the third term and jumped right into the 4th term.  We have many exciting things to do between now and June.

Thank you for your generous donations to the Nashua Soup Kitchen.  We have collected many cans of tuna fish in March and April.  1C helped IJS raise over $1200 for the walk on April 11.  Thank you to all those who donated and for your warm wishes and prayers that day.

The students have been working hard and learning new things everyday.

In religion we have learned about how the Holy Spirit helps us and guides us.  We also spent time learning about Lent, Holy Week and Easter.  We are beginning the next unit titled Jesus’ Church of Followers.  In phonics we are beginning our final long vowel-e.

In English the students have been working hard writing stories.  They know about the writing process and parts of a story.  Be sure to ask them to name the setting, author, characters, problem and solution in stories that you read together.  They can also tell you if the story is realistic/fantasy.  We are also learning a new part of speech.  Adjectives are very exciting!    In math we have been learning about place value.   The students are doing very well regrouping, estimating and comparing.  Ask them to tell you which number is greater when you see two numbers.

In the third marking period, expectations began to increase.  This is part of the preparation for second grade and move toward working independently.  Mrs. Phillips began these changes in January and they will continue through June.

1. Children are expected to check their own work to be sure it is complete and directions are followed.  Careful directions are always reviewed during the lesson.

2. They lose two points for backwards letters or numbers.

3. They lose two points for missing capitals, end marks, or capitals where they don’t belong.

4. They lose two points if their name/number not on papers.

In the fourth marking period, I will begin to count math homework toward the math grade. It will be graded and then averaged together to count as one homework grade for the report card.

Thank you for your support and warm welcome to Infant Jesus School.   I look forward to having a great finish to the school year.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  My email address is farley@ijschool.org

Sincerely,

Mrs. Farley
